Costas Montis was born on February 18, 1914 in Famagusta, Cyprus. At a very early age he lost his two brothers and his parents. In 1937 he graduated with a Law Degree from the University of Athens, but, since the British Colonial Government did not allow graduates from Greek universities to practice law in Cyprus, he held various positions until he became the Director of Tourism in 1961. He held that position until his retirement in 1976.
Costas Montis married his sweetheart, Ersi Constantinou from Morphou, in 1946. They had four children, Theodoulos, Marios, Lellos, and Stalo.
He died on March 1, 2004, at the age of 90, at his home in Ayios Dometios, Nicosia, surrounded by his family.
Costas Montis received numerous honors throughout his life, and he was nominated for the Nobel Prize. His poetry is being taught in universities and schools not only in Cyprus and Greece, but also in many other countries. His books have been, and continue to be, translated into many languages.
